China, toward the end of the Spring and Autumn Period, around 500 years before the Common Era, Lao Tzu set forth the principles of Taoism. Among these is the principle of “acting without acting.” Advocating an attitude of receptivity toward the natural flow of life, this does not mean doing nothing, but rather letting oneself be carried along by the flow, without forcing anything. Yùn Zhì, or natural beauty, emerges from this “doing without doing” when the artist surrenders himself with complete mastery to his art, for the beauty of the gesture.
